Kids Clothing Size Guide for AU: How to Pick the Right Fit Every Time

Kids Clothing Size Guide for AU: How to Pick the Right Fit Every Time

If you’ve ever bought the “right age” size and it arrived too small (or way too big), you’re not alone. Kids sizing can vary depending on brand, fabric stretch, and whether a piece is meant to be fitted or relaxed.

This guide is designed for Australian parents who want a simple, no-stress way to choose sizes that fit well — and help reduce returns.

Why kids sizes feel confusing in Australia

Kids grow fast, and “age sizing” is only a rough guide. Two children can both be 4 years old but have totally different:

  • Height
  • Build (slim vs broad)
  • Comfort preference (snug vs roomy)
  • Layering needs (especially in Melbourne/Canberra winters)

So instead of guessing by age, use quick measurements.

The 3 measurements that matter most

1) Height (the best starting point)

Height is usually the most reliable. If your child is tall for their age, sizing up often gives a better fit in sleeve and leg length. All our apparels come with recommended height on the size chart. Please check carefully when you are going to place the order.

How to measure:
Stand your child against a wall barefoot, mark the top of the head, measure down to the floor.ray

2) Bust/Chest (for tops, jackets, jumpers)

Chest helps you avoid that “tight underarms” feeling or pulling across buttons/zips.

How to measure:
Wrap a tape around the fullest part of the chest (under arms), keep it snug but not tight.

3) Waist / hips (optional but helpful for bottoms)

For leggings, pants, skirts — this can save you from waistbands that dig in or slide down.

How to measure:
Waist is usually around the belly button area for kids. Hips are around the widest part of the bum.

Age vs height — what should you trust?

Use age as your first filter, but let height decide the final size.

  • If your child is tall for age → choose the size that matches height (often one size up)
  • If your child is average height → age sizing usually works
  • If your child is between heights → use the “between sizes rule” below

Between sizes? This rule saves returns

When you’re stuck between two sizes, choose based on how the item is worn:

Choose the smaller size when:

  • It’s a stretchy fabric (like leggings)
  • It’s meant to be fitted
  • Your child dislikes extra fabric

Choose the bigger size when:

  • It’s outerwear (raincoats, jackets)
  • You want layering room (common in VIC/ACT/TAS)
  • Your child is growing quickly
  • You prefer longer wear time

Shopper tip: If you’re buying for the next season, sizing up is often smarter.

Fabric & fit: stretch, shrink, and comfort

Fit isn’t only size — it’s also fabric.

Stretchy fabrics (like leggings):

  • More forgiving
  • Often fit longer
  • Usually okay if slightly snug (as long as comfy)

Non-stretch or structured fabrics:

  • Need more accurate sizing
  • If between sizes, usually size up

Washing & shrink risk:

  • Cold wash helps maintain length and softness
  • Always read the Washing Instruction Label before doing laundry
  • Avoid overheating in dryers where possible

Quick fit checklist (save this)

Before you buy:

  • ✅ Will they wear it with layers (jumpers underneath)?
  • ✅ Do sleeves/legs need extra length for growth?
  • ✅ Is the fabric stretchy or structured?
  • ✅ Does your child prefer snug or roomy?

FAQs

1. Should I size up for winter?
Often yes — especially for layering in cooler Aussie states. For fitted pieces, keep true size.

2. What if my child is slim but tall?
Choose the size that fits height, then look for adjustable waists or stretchy fabrics for comfort.

3. Is “age size” reliable for gifts?
It’s okay for gifting, but if you can, choose items with some stretch or a relaxed fit.
